Did you know? Poor mental health costs employers between £33 billion and £42 billion a year. However mental health programmes can generate a return on investment of up to 800%.
Counselling & Talking Therapies
Counselling and talking therapies are an effective way of supporting an employee through many mental health challenges they are likely to encounter during their working life.
However, with waiting times for NHS talking therapy often in excess of 18 months, we recognise that employers need a much faster and more effective service if they are to support employees in a timely manner whilst maintaining productivity.
My Occ Health provide a responsive and supportive counselling service which can be accessed directly, or via our mental health screening service.
The service supports employees struggling with:
Anxiety
Depression
Stress
PTSD
Bereavement
Alcohol/drug dependence
Family/matrimonial
Bullying/harassment
Money worries
All of our counsellors are NCS, UKCP and BACP accredited and are fully vetted and insured.
How does it work?
Our counselling consultations are conducted by skype or telephone so that they are convenient and can even be conducted from home, to encourage the employee to be fully open about their challenges and get the most out of the sessions.
Employees can be referred directly into our counselling service or invited to complete our mental health screening initially, to determine whether counselling is appropriate.
An initial assessment will then be arranged between the employee and one of our experienced counsellors.
The initial assessment will recommend whether the employee is suitable for talking therapy, and how many sessions are recommended.
The employer must then confirm how many sessions they are willing to fund, or the employee can fund it themselves.
Talking therapy sessions are arranged and the employee will begin the therapy course.
Upon completion of the course, the therapist will provide recommendations either for further sessions, alternative treatment, or follow-on support if therapy has been successful.
What are the benefits?
Benefits to the organisation:
Prevents termination from employer or resignation from the employee- friction can occur when an employee is dealing with mental health issues which can lead to falling out with their employer and perhaps an unhappy parting of ways which doesn’t benefit either party.
Reduces cost of hiring new employees and training new staff- workers might take extended time off or leave their job completely if their mental health deteriorates significantly and then the employer will need to hire and train new staff, costing more time, money, and effort.
Smooth coordination between employee and employer- counselling can improve communication skills and help to improve relationships between employees and employers which in turn will increase productivity and the success of the company overall.
Encourages trust from employees- employees will know their employer cares about their mental health and is providing services to ensure workers are happy which improves the working environment and trust in the employer which also helps with business reputation.
Benefits to the employee:
Helps employees tackle their problems effectively- so if similar issues arise in the future they are better prepared to deal with them whether they are work based or personal.
Assists with decision making- counselling can improve mental wellbeing and give employees back control so they can make positive decisions both within their job role and in their home life.
Offers them a new perspective- gaining an outside perspective can help the employee look at their problem differently and deal with it better after seeing it through fresh eyes.
Helps to identify and address underlying problems the employee wasn’t aware of- counselling can help workers get to the root of their issues so they can better move forward, taking steps to change things in their life and improve their mental health.
They will likely be seen quicker than they would through the NHS- the waiting list for counselling through the NHS is extremely long and a person’s mental health can become even worse in the time they’re waiting to be seen. Counselling through our occupational health service will allow employees to see an experienced and professional counsellor quickly and easily.
